How would you improve your community?
In a world that is becoming increasingly digital, I believe the most meaningful way to improve a community lies in stepping away from screens and stepping into real conversations. While the internet offers convenience and speed, it often comes at the cost of genuine human interaction. If I had the opportunity to make a difference, I would start with something simple: presence.
Improving my community, to me, means creating stronger human connections. I would encourage local gatherings where people can share their stories, challenges, and ideas face-to-face. It could be as modest as a weekly walk in the park, a shared coffee morning, or helping someone carry groceries. These small acts, done consistently, have the power to rebuild trust and a sense of belonging two things that often feel lost in modern society.
I’d also focus on reviving the idea of shared responsibility. In my experience on drilling sites across the world, I’ve seen how powerful teamwork can be when built on mutual respect and personal interaction. Translating that into community life would mean encouraging neighbors to look after each other, check in, and offer help not through a screen, but with a knock on the door.
To improve a community, we don’t always need grand plans. Sometimes, we just need to remember what it feels like to truly listen, to truly care and to do so without the filter of the internet.

Yes, presence is huge! Someone else in this thread mentioned showing up, and it being present is doing just that. When one is fully present with another person, it makes all the difference in the world. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
