Lajos (Interviewer): Good morning, Mustafa. Thank you for joining me today. How are you?
Mustafa (Interviewee): Good morning, Lajos. I’m doing well, thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Lajos: Great to hear. Let’s dive right into it. You’ve been working in Saudi Arabia for a while now. How would you describe your experience living and working here?
Mustafa: It’s been quite an interesting journey. Living in Saudi Arabia offers a unique mix of traditional and modern experiences. The work environment, especially in our field, is very dynamic and challenging. However, the cultural experience is also very enriching. I’ve learned a lot about the customs and traditions, which has been fascinating.
Lajos: That’s good to know. Could you tell us more about the work culture in Saudi Arabia? How does it compare to other places you’ve worked?
Mustafa: The work culture here is quite structured and hierarchical. There is a strong emphasis on respect for authority and seniority. People are very dedicated and take their responsibilities seriously. Compared to other places, I would say the pace can be both fast and slow, depending on the project. There’s a balance between getting things done efficiently and taking time to ensure the quality and safety of the work.
Lajos: Speaking of quality and safety, how do you find the safety standards in Saudi Arabia, especially in our field?
Mustafa: Safety is taken very seriously here. In our industry, there are strict regulations and protocols to follow, which are strictly enforced. The companies invest a lot in training and safety equipment to ensure that all employees are aware of the risks and how to mitigate them. This focus on safety gives us confidence in our daily operations.
Lajos: That’s reassuring. Now, on a more personal note, how do you find life outside of work? How do you spend your free time in Saudi Arabia?
Mustafa: Outside of work, life can be quite relaxed. There are plenty of recreational activities, from visiting malls and restaurants to exploring cultural sites and natural landscapes. Personally, I enjoy spending time with friends and colleagues, exploring local cuisine, and occasionally traveling within the country to see more of its beautiful desert landscapes and coastal areas.
Lajos: It sounds like you have a good balance. Lastly, what advice would you give to someone considering moving to Saudi Arabia for work?
Mustafa: I would say come with an open mind and be willing to adapt to a different culture and way of life. It’s important to respect local customs and laws, and take the time to understand the culture. Also, be prepared for the weather—it can be quite extreme, especially in the summer. Overall, it’s a place full of opportunities, and with the right mindset, it can be a very rewarding experience.
Lajos: Thank you, Mustafa, for sharing your insights. It was great talking to you, and I’m sure our audience will find your experiences valuable.
Mustafa: Thank you, Lajos. It was a pleasure talking to you.
Returning to Work: Mixed Feelings After Summer Break
How are you feeling right now?
Today, I am experiencing a mix of emotions. I’ve just returned to work after my summer vacation, and I still feel like a part of me is back at home. It’s always a bit challenging to transition from the relaxed pace of vacation to the demands of work. However, I feel refreshed and somewhat recharged. Taking time off was necessary, and it allowed me to clear my mind and rest. Now, it’s time to refocus and dive back into my responsibilities, even if my heart is still lingering in the calm of the summer days.

Do you remember your favorite book from childhood?
Of course, I remember! Growing up in the so-called Eastern Bloc, we didn’t have much access to Western literature, but I had a few favorites that left a lasting impression on me. One of them was “Four Tankmen and a Dog,” a Yugoslav children’s book set during World War II. It was a captivating story that I cherished.
Another favorite was a Hungarian novel called “Kántor Investigates.” This was a crime fiction book that sparked my interest in mysteries and detective stories. Both books were integral parts of my childhood, providing a sense of adventure and excitement during those years.
How do you know when it’s time to unplug? What do you do to make it happen?
In our fast-paced lives, recognizing the right moment to step back and recharge isn’t always straightforward. For me, it’s my body that signals when I’ve pushed my limits. The signs of fatigue are unmistakable, and they remind me that it’s time to slow down.
Unplugging is essential, yet it’s not always easy to accomplish, especially when my work comes with significant stress. Despite the challenges, I make deliberate efforts to disconnect. This isn’t always successful, but the intention is there.
Thankfully, my schedule allows for a substantial break; every three months, I get an entire month to rejuvenate. This period is crucial for me—it’s a time to restore my energy and return to my tasks with renewed vigor.
It’s important to listen to our bodies and recognize the need for rest. How do you know when it’s time to unplug, and what steps do you take to make it happen? Let’s discuss the strategies that work and how we can better support each other in maintaining our well-being.
Throughout my life, my career has been defined by my work in exploration drilling, a field I have dedicated almost 30 years to. Starting from the bottom, I worked my way up through the ranks and now serve as a Drilling Supervisor in Saudi Arabia. This journey has taken me around the world, from Africa to Japan, and even to the Arctic Circle.
The extensive experience I’ve gained over the years has not only shaped my professional life but has also led to the publication of two books: “Diamond Drilling” and “Exploration Drilling.” These books are available for purchase worldwide and encapsulate the knowledge and insights I’ve gathered throughout my career.
Working in this industry has been incredibly rewarding, offering me the opportunity to explore diverse cultures and challenging environments, all while doing what I love.
Religion is a profoundly intricate subject, and I believe it’s a deeply personal matter for everyone. There’s a significant distinction between practicing a religion and merely having faith in God. Personally, I am a believer in God, and this faith plays an essential role in my life. However, I do not actively practice any religion.
This distinction is crucial as it highlights that belief can exist independently of religious rituals or practices. Belief in a higher power can provide comfort, guidance, and a sense of purpose. In contrast, practicing religion often involves community participation, rituals, and a structured approach to worship.
As I sit to ponder on what I excel at, I realize it’s a question I often circle back to without a definitive answer. In my profession, where precision and dedication intertwine, I’ve come to rely not on self-assessment but on feedback from those around me.
They say your work speaks for itself, and perhaps it does. Every day, I delve into tasks that demand a meticulous eye and a steady hand. Yet, am I good at what I do? It’s a query I can’t respond to outright. Instead, I look to the responses and reactions of my peers and supervisors. Their acknowledgments and constructive criticisms paint a picture of my professional landscape.
What does “having it all” mean to you? Is it attainable?
In today’s fast-paced world, the phrase “having it all” is often thrown around, but what does it truly mean? For many, the concept conjures images of a perfect balance between a successful career, a loving family, vibrant health, and personal fulfillment. But is this ideal genuinely attainable, or is it a modern myth that sets us up for perpetual striving and inevitable disappointment?
For me, “having it all” goes beyond the surface-level achievements that society often promotes. It isn’t just about ticking off boxes like a high-powered job, a picture-perfect home, or even the exotic vacations splashed across social media. Instead, it centers on two fundamental pillars: health and love. As long as I have these, I believe I truly have everything I need.
